It was assumed at the time that she had come into collision with one of the myraid fragments of planetary debris infesting the Ecliptic between Mars and Jupiter. Years later—when the search for wreckage was at last abandoned—it was assumed that her Captain and crew, smitten by the madness not uncommon in those relatively early days of space travel, had decided to abandon their assignment and had driven their ship out to Jupiter or Saturn, had crashed on either of the two giant planets—or, fuel exhausted, had fallen
